group starting Hey everyone. I'm trying to start a group for ftm (or transgender in general) youth (under 18) that involves getting together to hang out and do fun things rather than sitting around and just talking. But I have absolutely no idea on where to start or what do.
My idea is to have a bimonthly outing of some sort that allows us to just hang out and enjoy being in a safe environment and hopefully with that comfort have some discussions or whatnot amongst ourselves having to do with how we feel and how we're dealign with being trans.
I'm in los angeles and I know there's tons of groups available, but don't think there's one like this.
Any tips on how to get this formed would be widely appreciated.
Thanks,
Jake

Notification System Hey Guys,
Unfortunately with our last release, and its instability, we were forced to roll back releases. Unfortunately in doing so, it would seem that our notification system has been broken somehow. Our engineers are working on this issue as quickly as possible. We hope to have a patch within the next day, so we can deploy our code and fix the notification system at the same time. Please *bear* with us ;)
Currently all notifications are being queued up so they can be processed as soon as the fix is pushed and verified to be working correctly.
Thank you,

New name:) I did it! Now I've finally changed my name. I'll receive my new paper work in a couple of days and then it's official! And damn, those people were nice to me:) So from now on I'll be Morgan instead of Anya. Didn't just choose that name because it's gender neutral, but also because I like it the best.

Yet another intro Hello. I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm really terrible at these things...but here we go.
I'm Chelsea. I'm a 24-year old student attending Rutgers, majoring in Comparative Literature. I've been out as MtF to myself for about two years now. It came gradually over the years...when I was a kid I imagined myself as a girl. In fact, it consumed most of my daydreams. In high school, I was never into the male gender role. After high school, I found myself becoming increasingly interested in crossdressing and feminization. I can't remember the exact moment when I realized this fact about me, but it was after reading online about the experiences of one transgendered woman that just made things...click.
I have the support of amazing friends, and am with a boy right now who not only accepts me for what I am, but has promised to be with me wherever this leads. I'm still quite undecided on going through transition for various reasons, but I've decided to hold off starting it (if I decide to) until I'm out of school. I'm looking forward to reading through this community to learn more about the process and what it entails.
So as to not make this a completely pointless post, I was wondering if someone can point me to some legitimate references on the process? I find it difficult to dig through the countless herbal supplement ads whenever I dive into Google.
Thank you. <3

Intro Hi, I'm new. I'm genderqueer, and I'm also on the discussion board "What is Gender?". I'd like to go by Teagan, because it's unisex and fits better than my birth name. I'm not sure how I feel about transitioning, and even if I was sure I wanted to do it I can't at this time.
I'll probably drop by for discussions and for advice on what I can change now. Maybe changing a little will tell me how far I want to go, and what to do when I get the chance.
Nice to meet you all.

Hello/advice? Hey. I'm Ritchie, 15 year-old ftm. I'm looking for some advice, I guess. I'm lucky enough to have friends who don't mind about it (at least the ones I've told so far), but I'm a little nervous about both talking with them in more detail about it and discussing it with my parents. I'm not expecting them to kick me out, they're not like that, but it could still go badly if I screw up telling them. All my parents really get right now is that I don't like acting/dressing female, and they're okay with that. But there's a big jump from that to saying "hey mom, dad, I wanna be a boy." And even with my friends who've been okay with it, I'm scared about how they'll react if/when I start transition.
What I want to know is... how should I go about discussing it, maybe how to react to concerns they might have... and if they're receptive, what am I supposed to do first? If I want to be able to transition, what do I have to do? (I understand surgery is probably not an option until I'm 18, but am I allowed to do anything now?) It might be easier for them if I say I don't want to jump completely into this all at once, but maybe do one thing at a time, and I'd like to know what that should be. (I'm planning on asking them for a binder, but I've met resistance with this before. Is that a good first step and should I keep fighting for it, or should I look for something else?) I'm a bit worried about money in our family at the moment- is there a way to make costs easier? Sorry about asking so many questions, but I'm feeling really confused about everything right now, so any help would be appreciated. (I hope this is the right tag. If I need to change/add something, tell me?)

NOM is Not a Goddam Charity, but I Know A Better One Let us give thanks and praise to people who have to fact-check the shitty work of a third party vendor. /snark
Chase declares NOM ineligible for charity receipt.
But a Chase spokesman asserted late Thursday that the antigay group headed by Maggie Gallagher is not eligible for charitable funds — even if it garnered sufficient votes — because it violates the contest's nondiscrimination rules. The database of groups was generated by GuideStar, a third-party firm that provides research on nonprofit groups.
“Organizations that receive votes from the guidestar database will be reviewed to make sure that they’re in the compliance with all of our guidelines,” Joe Evangelisti, head of media relations for JP Morgan Chase, told The Advocate.
According to NOM’s website, its education fund “represents another aspect of NOM's overall effort to protect marriage, engaged solely in pro-marriage education and research, making information resources available to clergy, scholars, political leaders, and activists across the country.”
GuideStar, you are made of spectacular amounts of fail. Yes, NOM's Education Fund is listed as a 501(c)(3), but have you all had your heads up your asses? Do you not watch the news? Because anyone who has not been a hermit for the past few years has at least heard of NOM, and knows that they run political campaigns.
Facebookies, it is unlikely that NOM will be removed from the contest list. Requests for removal must be made by the charity themselves, and we all know how much Brian Brown and Maggie Gallagher love to shill for money from the gullible. However, since Chase is now fully aware of the obscene nature of NOM's work, they have declared NOM Education Funds ineligible to receive funds should they win. Harrumph.
Each Facebook user, once they enable the application, has 20 votes in the first round. I have 17 votes left. One of them just went to the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). GLSEN is an education non-profit dedicated to helping parents, students, teachers, and the public create a safe school environment where all children can learn free from harassment and bullying, especially the kind based in homophobia and heterosexism. They currently have 551 votes in the first round.

HRT abroad? Hi, I'm an mtf hoping to start on HRT in the next few months and I have a question about international travel. I'm a college student in the US majoring in Japanese and am really hoping to study abroad at the end of next year to get the most out of it as I feel I'm getting close to academic fluency. I'm also concerned that this could very well be my last chance to live there longterm as it's already hard to find work in Japan and once I transition it will probably be harder still.
Does anyone here have experience with living overseas on HRT? What difficulties am I going to face, and what am I going to have to know?
Thanks.

I wrote this last night After the NY Senate chose to vote 'no' on equal marriage rights, I wrote this little piece and posted it on my FB:
Today the NY Senate voted 'no' to gay marriage and preserved the sanctity and future of traditional marriage. Gays and lesbians are the number one threat to marriage today. It is a little known fact, but homosexuals are responsible for 100% of ALL divorces in NY. Either by causing spouses to outgrow one another, or by messing about with married people's bank accounts so that they have financial problems which cause friction, there is a gay person behind every divorce.
( Cut for mention of domestic abuse ) You may ask, "What about spouses who cheat? Surely THEY are responsible for their own actions and the subsequent cheapening of marriage?" Well, my friend, I'm sorry to tell you, but you have been suckered in by the propoganda of the gay agenda. It's a tempting fiction, but here's the truth. FACT: every single person who cheats does so with either a gay man or lesbian woman who has strategically placed themselves in that person's life to compel them to break their marriage vows. It is all part of the master plan of the gay agenda.
So I congratulate the NY Senate on their decision today. They are defending and upholding all that is good and right in this world. My only question is, is it really enough? We are still at risk here, people. As long as there is one homosexual allowed the same rights as we real people to walk freely in this country, I'm sad to say I'm not sure we'll ever be truly safe.
This is Naarah-Blue Meath, an upholder of TRUE marriage rights, saying "Goodnight New York, and well done." ********In case anyone missed it, this is dripping with sarcasm and bitterness*********

NOM Is Not A Goddam Charity Cross-posted at Pam's House Blend.
"There are some upon this earth of yours," returned the Spirit, "who lay claim to know us, and who do their deeds of passion, pride, ill-will, hatred, envy, bigotry, and selfishness in our name, who are as strange to us and all our kith and kin, as if they had never lived. Remember that, and charge their doings on themselves, not us." - Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol
Chase Bank is donating $5 million to charities this year via their Chase Community Giving Facebook page. Facebook users can search for and vote on which charities should receive the money. Nice idea. There are a lot of organizations that could truly use a cut of $5 million. I found my favorite charity, the ASPCA, then took a moment and checked out the rules. Rule #4 of eligibility says the following:
Eligible charities must be 501(c)(3) organizations with an operating budget of under $10 million, and must meet the other listed requirements. A Charity that, by itself or through an affiliated entity, discriminates on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, disability, age, veteran status, medical condition, citizenship, ancestry or marital status is not eligible. Complete eligibility requirements for charities can be found in the Official Rules.
So imagine my surprise when I saw National Organization for Marriage Education Fund in Manassas, Virginia as a contending charity. Even if Brian Brown does some spectacular contortions trying to explain that the education fund itself is not discriminatory, there's that tricky little bit about "through an affiliated entity." Unbelievable. Have they no shame at all? But wait! There's more!
Other Charities that are ineligible include, but are not limited to, those with annual operating expenses of more than $10,000,000 based on most recent IRS filings or otherwise substantiated through audited financial statements, organizations designated by the IRS as private foundations, organizations not listed in IRS Publication 78, or organizations otherwise not in alignment with Sponsor's corporate social responsibility guidelines.
Additional reasons a Charity may be deemed ineligible include, but are not limited to, the Charity and/or its management being subject to any investigation for fraud, financial misconduct or other criminal activity. Any organization determined to be ineligible at any time will be disqualified.
"[S]ubject to investigation for fraud, financial misconduct." HA! Well, we have Fred Karger to thank for subjecting NOM to that particular disqualifier. The investigation in Maine into election ethics violations is ongoing. But wait! There's even more! Organizations which want to be considered as recipients must contact Chase, and submit their IRS Form 990s, as evidenced by the language in the information for charities:
All of the information about a charity comes from the charity and the charities' IRS form 990, which is provided by the charity.
That means that NOM itself had to apply for eligibility for these funds. They could not be nominated by a third party. So, to recount, we have a political organization whose sole purpose is to discriminate based on sexual orientation, which is currently under investigation for misconduct. According to NOM's 2007 and 2008 990s (thanks, Chino_Blanco!), their official operating budget is well below $10 million. Those of us who have been victimized by their campaigns worth tens of millions of dollars know far better what the reality is.
Know what's really disgusting about all this? According to the National Institute On Money In State Politics, the money going into 2008's marriage equality ballot races, on both sides, totaled $101.1 million. Maine's Question One was worth over 9 million dollars. Washington's Ref 71? $2.2 million total. That's over $112 million in two years in races to take away the rights of decent, law-abiding gay and lesbian people to form legal families. How much good could have been done for the needy with that much money? If NOM didn't exist to spread anti-gay hate in the name of Jesus, if our rights to form legal families weren't up for popularity contests, how many poor families would have benefitted from that much money so freely given? How many homeless, sick, abused animals? How many kids needing homes, or medical treatment? How many seniors living in poverty? Our families are not immoral, or wrong, or a threat to America. What IS immoral and wrong is putting up rights for a vote, using money that could have been given to those truly in need, those who are truly threatened, and instead use it to spread hate and incite violence. Doing that is wrong. To then turn around and claim to be a charitable organization doing good works for those in need is beyond obscene.
Needless to say, I took it upon myself to click over to the Contact form in the Facebook application and send the following message:
Chase Community Giving Associates,
I noticed on your Facebook page that the National Organization for Marriage's education fund is listed in your database of charities eligible for Chase Community Giving funds. NOM is not a charity, despite what its incorporation status may be, or what its submitted Form 990 says. NOM is a political action committee whose sole purpose is to work against marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples in the United States. Their purpose is to discriminate against law-abiding gay and lesbian people. This is in direct violation of Chase Community Giving's eligibility policy, which states that a charity may not discriminate based, among other criteria, on sexual orientation.
In addition to falsifying data for eligibility in Chase Community Giving, NOM is suspected by many to be a front group for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon), specifically incorporated to wage discriminatory political campaigns against law-abiding gay and lesbian citizens. The State of Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices is currently investigating NOM for election law violations with regard to NOM's fundraising practices regarding the recent Question One ballot initiative in Maine. Being the subject of a fraud and ethics investigation should also disqualify NOM from eligibility for receipt of funds.
NOM's own executive director, Brian Brown, admitted to press that the group had spent $600,000 to lobby New York State Senators to vote against the marriage equality bill before the Senate.
http://coloradoindependent.com/43455/marriage-defenders-celebrate-victory-in-new-york-await-investigation-in-maine
The lies and bigotry fomented by NOM's campaigns have resulted in escalated levels of anti-gay violence in California.
http://www.marriageequality.org/uploads/REPORT%20TWO_PROP_8_HURT_MY_FAMILY_FINAL_VERSION.pdf
In Santa Clara County the District Attorney's office has attributed the 2008-2009 violent anti-gay crime totals - which are DOUBLE the rate of 2007 - directly to NOM and the Prop 8 campaign.
http://www.ebar.com/news/article.php?sec=news&article=3839
Would Chase really give charity money to an organization which is under election fraud investigation and to which the Department of Justice has attributed escalated violence levels? Surely there are far more deserving organizations out there.I strongly urge Chase Community Giving to remove National Organization for Marriage from the eligible recipient list. I will be publicizing the fact that Chase currently lists NOM as a candidate for grants on this website. Thank you for your time. Happy Holidays!
Sincerely, [redacted]
cc Fred Karger, Californians Against Hate
This message can also be emailed to chasecommunitygiving.inquiry@chase.com. I expect there to be a deluge of angry emails in Chase's inbox tomorrow.
NOM as a charity. I don't fucking THINK so. /snarls
UPDATE!!!! JPMorgan Chase says that NOM is ineligible for charity funds.
Apparently Chase hired a third party vendor to verify the entries. /headdesk

Binders? I'm getting more and more dysphoric about my breasts. Now I can hardly stand looking at them and they're always in the way. I've tried binding, but they're size D and it hurts like Hell. It's depressing, really. Wish there was an easier way. I kind of hope they turn out to be milk tits that will eventually fall off ... Though I'm not sure I'd like a visit from the Tit Fairy. Or have an EVEN larger pair grow out instead:S ... Anyone know what kind of binder, you should get, if you have large breasts?

Name Change Well this time next week I will hopefully be legally Melissa! My court date is next Wednesday, and I am full of emotions! I am excited and nervous at the same time. I have been having mild anxiety attacks and eye twitches over the last week. I really can't wait till it's over, but at the same time I feel like I might be going too fast for my family. My parents found out about me in July, and here it is December and I am changing my name! I was thinking I would do this early next year, and that would give them time to adjust some more.
Anyways for those who have gone through a name change do you think I am moving too fast, and what kind of emotions did you go through before the court date and after?
Peace
Melissa :)

MogileFS Maintenance **EDIT Thu Dec 3 23:24:15 UTC 2009 **
Hey Everyone, we are about to run the last alter job that we need to on our database servers. This will effect userpics / scrapbook / vgift images for the next few hours. Have no fear, your images aren't lost, there is just a really intensive process running on the servers which store the information for mogilefs. Thank you for your understanding and all the LJ love...
Hey LJers,
I just wanted to let you all know that we are going to be performing some mogilefs maintenance over the next few days. We will be upgrading our current version to latest stable as well as changing some db config information to better handle the amount of files we are currently hosting. This shouldn't cause a big impact on site stability, but you may see some minor delays with userpic / scrapbook images appearing or other requests associated with our mogilefs. We would love to not have that happen, but unfortunately with some of the steps we need to take we have to cause a delay with images. I figured this was a better solution than taking down all of LiveJournal because well lets face it, we all need our daily LJ fix ;)
Thanks,

OFFS, part seventy one Suzie's wank about how all BDSM is rape never gets old. Especially when it's a gay man performing a musical number at the AMA..
BDSM =/= rape, lather rinse, repeat, beat head against desk.
Stigmatizing a woman for having (legal, informed, consenting) sex in a manner that you don't personally like is no different from what fundies, the patriarchy, and other misogynists do, no matter how you try to dress it up...Judging a woman for her sexual choices is condemning her for making the same choices that men make EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. It is, on its face, an anti-feminist position.
I've been raped, I've participated in BDSM, I fucking know the difference, and Suzie, get a therapist to help you deal with your problems, chief among them a crippling cognitive dissonance. Seriously, just admit you don't know WTF you're talking about, and let the subject drop already. Oh, and by the by, I would not mind one bit spending a few hours on a leash at Adam Lambert's feet. *^_^*
(And no, you cannot try to disguise your condemnation of women who consensually participate in the scene/lifestyle by whining, "But what about teh Menz who don't understand issues of consent and see this on the TeeVee and think it's okaaay?" As though men who enjoy doing actual violence to women will be stopped by cessation of portrayals of consensual BDSM acts, or will be inspired by a musical number performed by a ragingly gay man who also made out with another guy on stage.)
Christ. Just...no.
