Conflicted

I am just so conflicted. I know meeting with my new therapist here in like a week will help but I was hoping I could maybe get some 'help' before then. Just wondering if anyone else felt like I do and where they are now.

I identity more as a guy. It just feels natural and better to me. I feel most comfortable dressed like a guy and I like it when I am mistaken for one. However, I feel like I am betraying someone if I get rid of all of my femininity. I hate dressing in revealing clothing but got use to it because I thought that is what my husband wanted. I will admit he looks at me differently when I do and I like that look but the discomfort I feel in those clothes is just so great, especially now that I am being honest with myself. So, anyways, kinda to my point, I have wanted a breast reduction since they kept growing (2 kids does that to ya). But now I am wondering should I just reduce them or get rid of them since the cost is about the same for both. But I feel bad if I completely get rid of them because I feel like I can't be feminine for my husband then yet I know he doesn't want me doing that.

Anyone else have this kind of internal conflict happen? What did you decide?

Alan Grayson does it again in truly spectacular fashion
Can we trade in President Obama for a President Grayson? Please?

Last night, the House Republicans tried, and failed, to squelch a speech that I gave on health care. I intend to vote for the health care bill because that bill saves lives. And I also intend to speak out, as loudly as I can, on behalf of those Americans who cannot speak out, those who have died because they had no health insurance. And the Republicans tried, and failed, to shut me down, to shut down the truth.

Here's what happened.

I had reserved an hour on the Floor of the House for a "special order." When the hour began, I noted that a Harvard study had concluded that 44,789 Americans die each year because they have no health insurance. I also noted that the Urban Institute had released figures on the number of uninsured in each Congressional district. Observing that every single House Republican had pledged to block health coverage for the insured, I then did the math:

"Alabama District 1, Congressman Jo Bonner, 114 dead."
"Alabama District 3, Congressman Mike Rogers, 88 dead."

I continued for 23 minutes, from Alabama to Ohio. Then the Republicans demanded that I "yield," so they could object and interrupt me. I said no: "My time is limited, and I intend to use it." Flustered, the Republicans then asked my "words be taken down," and threatened to call a roll-call vote, at 8 p.m., on whether I should be sanctioned. This halted the proceedings, as you can see here.

Go check out the entire article. There's video. Glorious. Alan Grayson lays the dead at the feet of the criminals who support leaving them to die.

How would you define trans liberation, and a trans liberationist politic?
is it roughly a synonym for anti-cissexist?
I'm especially interested in any blogs or references that don't cite feinberg or koyama (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=w4y&q=%22trans-liberation%22&aq=f&oq=&aqi=)

one of the reasons I am asking is I've been using "trans liberationist" a lot lately--somehow it crept into my vocabulary and I'm just wondering if I'm using it in a coherent way.

tampa, fl - city council voting to amend human rights ord. to include gender discrimination
"Tampa council grants protections to transgender people"
By Janet Zink, Times Staff Writer
Posted: Nov 05, 2009 02:04 PM

TAMPA — The City Council on Thursday gave unanimous preliminary approval to expanding its human rights ordinance to protect transgender people from discrimination.

But does that mean cross-dressers are protected, too?

Specifically, the ordinance prohibits discrimination on the basis of "gender identity and expression."

"Is it today that I'm sitting next to Albert and tomorrow I'm sitting next to Alice?" asked council member Charlie Miranda.

a few thoughts of my own:

- the title is misleading, because this was just a preliminary vote.
- so much of the article makes me want to *headdesk*
- the whole "crossdresser vs. transgender" false dichotomy is completely ridiculous on so many levels.
~so much of the banter from some of the council folks seems to be centered around this completely privileged position which just might set up trans* folks up for further scrutiny of their bodies in the name of "non-discrimination."
~who gets to decide whether one is "truly" trans* or just trying to cause a disruption or whatever? [just for clarity's sake, I am referencing charlie miranda's words here.]
~what would happen to people who are transgender and personally ID with a M or F label but are not considered to be "passing" by employees?
~etc...
- so many of the comments make me want to *headdesk* as well

a few [more positive] thoughts of my own:

- YAY! my favorite city council persons were among the ones who countered the derailing points about "cross-dressers" and what not.
- john dingfelder, one of those council folks, is running for county commissioner in 2010. last night, he told me that if gets voted in, he will be a solid ally in helping overturn the current county-wide ban on gay book displays in libraries. double YAY!
- despite the ignorance of some of those folks ... there was only only ONE dissenting vote! that's pretty damn exciting, eh?

...what's new with local news where you all live?

Ridiculous bi-phobia from Daddyhunt
I was surprised to find a rather bi-phobic blog on the Daddyhunt blog - especially since they had dumped the previous excellent selection of bloggers when the DH website was sold, including several excellent bi writers.

Sad that this writer on the DH blog and several other commentators on this entry are so quick to judgment about others. Most of these comments claiming the non-existence of Bi men are rooted in ignorance of the true lives of these people and have base in reality that is largely centered around their gay identity.

Many homosexuals seem to have a stake in invalidating Bisexuals' as if it were a means to validating their own sexuality. But the truth is — many bi folks if not most of them are quite well adjusted — other than trying to have to prove our identity is valid to everyone.

Bi men are just like other queers, yet less well understood than any other. Bisexuality encompasses a multitude of sexual expressions, and yet most people don't seem to grasp that Bi lives are no more or less complex than their own.

It does seem that he's struggling to find some greater meaning in bisexuality, but I would have expected a more enlightened attitude from this website, considering that a significant portion of their clientele surely must be Bi.

Bi-curious? Ri-diculous!

Recently new hunky Hollywood it-man Gerard Butler was quoted as saying that he had dated men, as well as women, in the past, supposedly from a 1994 interview with Movieline magazine.  It turned out the quote was bogus, and while there is something interesting in the fact that it happened to come out RIGHT while he was promoting his new romantic comedy, what really interested me was the reactions on gay blogs when the news broke.  Peppered within typical variations of “I’d hit that” and musing about the “300” hottie’s body was something I hadn’t really thought existed… true bisexual bigotry.
What started as a standard dialogue regarding the questionable heterosexuality of Hollywood’s leading men (a common gay man’s pastime) quickly turned into a pretty heated, and nasty, debate on the truth of bisexuality in general. ....
So are these guys bisexual?  Maybe… and maybe not.  I think of a “real” bisexual as someone that has sex and full on-dates members of both sexes.  So what does that say about the men, some on this site, that label themselves “bisexual” or “curious” while they live lives with women?  Well it seems there are many gay men out that just can’t stomach this.  While we continue to fight for the legal right to get married, while we continue pray for a day when homosexuals need not worry about being bashed, beaten, or killed just because of it… a married man or guy with a girlfriend can have the face of the “regular” life while he can now and then go out to the bar, bookstore, rest stop, etc. to get himself plowed or suck a little dick.  I do see the cop-out in this type of lifestyle.  I faced my family, I faced my friends, and in coming out I really ultimately faced ME.  And the strength I get from overcoming that personal difficulty is truly remarkable.  But that’s me.

Annoying/infuriating news re healthcare reform (USA).....
Just in via headline-sampler in my Yahell Mail...

Conservatives shop sex ops ban to GOP

The federal government would be banned from funding sex change operations and other services for transgender individuals if social conservative activists get their way.

There’s no sponsor yet for an amendment to the health care overhaul – and it may remain in the dustbin of unrealized wedge issues – but culture warriors are shopping the proposal to Republican senators.  (Full article at Politico.com)

Obviously, it can't just be assumed that healthcare reform is going to be automatically inclusive of everyone who's heretofore been marginalized by the system -- political/rhetorical pressure needs to be applied by us, because it's imminently being applied against us, on the same "social values" grounds as the pressure already being exerted to ban any governmental funding of abortions via public healthcare option (I recall the topic coming up earlier here, but it wasn't necessarily seen as related to trans issues then, even though they are naturally lumped together by social conservatives).   Politicians need a good kick in the arse from their trans constituents and everyone else who cares about actual social equality, before this evasion has any chance to get slipped in and undermine any real healthcare reform.

Does anyone have any information on the adoption process? I know it varies from state to state. .... I'm from New Hampshire and I am trying to adopt my girlfriends son but I just wanted to know what kinds of ID is required.... basically I'm wondering if I can slip by the radar with my gender. I pass 100% of the time, so I am wondering if they will even catch on.... ?

Again
Last year, it was Californians putting gay people below livestock. This year, it was Mainers putting gay people below potheads.

Thanks, Maine. And fuck you, too.

By the way, did you know that medical marijuana as we know it wouldn't exist if it weren't for gay men? AIDS patients in the 80s, the vast majority of whom were gay men, first started smoking pot to counteract the severe pain and nausea caused by anti-AIDS drug cocktails, which is the primary reason for rapid weight loss among late-stage AIDS patients. Soon that remedy spread to cancer patients suffering from side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and glaucoma patients and those with cataracts, or people with herniated spinal discs. All because a bunch of fags found a way to keep food down through the hell of AIDS treatments.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it. Assholes.

Next time this happens, I'm going to start taking away YOUR families and see how well you enjoy it.

Attention Mainers!
How to Vote NO ON QUESTION ONE

If you are not a registered voter in Maine, and you are a resident, Maine has same-day voter registration. It is NOT TOO LATE. Please help retain the marriage equality law. Vote NO ONE QUESTION ONE.

Voting on Election Day

Where do I go to vote?

Every town and city has its own places where people vote. You can call your town office or city hall to find out where you vote, or use the online Voter Information Lookup service at http://www.maine.gov/portal/government/edemocracy/lookuppollingplace.php . Voting places open between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., depending on the size of the town. Local officials can give you the exact opening time for your community. All polling places close at 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.

Can I have help voting?

Yes. If you need help reading or marking the ballot, you may ask a relative or friend for assistance. The helper does not have to be a voter or old enough to vote. An election official can also help you read or mark a ballot. However, your employer or union official cannot help you vote.

Do I need to go to the polls on Election Day to vote?

No. Any registered voter may cast an absentee ballot instead of voting in person at the polling place. You do not need to have a specific reason or be unable to vote at the polls on Election Day to use an absentee ballot. Call your town or city clerk for an application and assistance.

How do I locate and contact my municipal clerk?

You can find contact information for your town office or city hall on Maine.gov at http://www.maine.gov/local/.

You may also contact:
Office of the Secretary of State
Division of Elections
101 State House Station
Augusta, ME 04333-0101
(207)624-7650
CEC.Elections@maine.gov
http://www.maine.gov/sos/cec/elec/
Registering to Vote

Who can register and vote in Maine?

To register, you must be a United States citizen, at least 17 years of age, and live in Maine.

To vote in the November 3, 2009 General Election, you must be registered in the community where you reside, and be at least 18 years of age.

Where do I go to register?

You can register to vote at your town office or city hall, through any Motor Vehicle branch office, in most state & federal social service agencies, or at voter registration drives. Completed voter registration cards may be hand delivered or mailed to your town office or city hall, or sent to the Secretary of State’s Office in Augusta.

Is there a deadline for registering?

No. It’s never too late to register to vote in Maine. You can register to vote until, and including, Election Day. There is no cut-off date for registering to vote in person at your town office or city hall. If you want to register to vote by mail, the cut-off date is the close of business on the 21st day before the election. That date is October 13, 2009 for the General Election.

so i'm in this gender class
and i was thinking on the subject today and i came up with this theroy that apparently isn't well supported.. and i wanted to run it by you guys and cretique it and see what i've leaving out or not thinking of and getting opinions.

theres 3 levels:...

Sex - a choice that was made for you when you were born and isn't generally changed but it CAN be, it just takes a great deal of effort :/

gender- who you are, not a choice you make, it's something you discover. at different times in your life you may be more of less aware of it. and i don't think you can change it.....(?)

Presentation - a choice you made on a day to day level when you put clothes on in the morning and when you open your mouth and every time you move. for some people this takes no effort at all and for some it takes alot of effort to be seen as their gender, whatever that may be.

I've been trying to come up with a somewhat concise summation of all of this business not just for the queer community but something that encompases everyone because i think alot of the time "gender nonconformists" are seen as those people who use too many terms to discribe themselfs and it's too confusing to bother learning... or it gets over simplifyed to "they were just born in the wrong body" and i want something that includes gender conformists as well (and what's rly going on here) as well as gender queers and trans people.

I welcome critiques, and if this offends someone then i'm sry, that was not the intention, quite the opposite, that's why i'm asking for feedback.

Thanks

Get Out the Vote for No On One (Maine marriage equality)
Tomorrow is election day. In Maine, that means people will have a chance to vote (AGAIN) on whether gay people in Maine are really human beings with the same civil rights as everyone else.

Because it's a non-Presidential or midterm election year without popular candidates on the ballot in Maine, that means voter turnout is typically low. Polling on Question 1 indicates that this will be a neck and neck race, dependent on voter turnout.

If you are out of state, you can still help get out the vote by doing phone banking. You can sign up online, or if you're really impatient like me, email Kelechi at kelechi AT protectmaineequality DOT org or Cody at cperkins AT oberlin DOT edu. Tell them you want an invite to the webex trainer for phonebanking. These two wonderful ladies will hook you up personally with a time to take the training on the online phone banking system, and then you can spend however long or short a time you want making calls to voters, reminding them to get to the polls tomorrow to vote NO ON QUESTION ONE.

If you are in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and can make a one day trip to help canvass and GOTV, please sign up for DRIVE FOR EQUALITY. Here's the message from those fine folks.

The "Drive for Equality" hotel in South Portland still has space available, and the staging locations still need volunteers.

(A) We are providing FREE HOTEL ROOM SPACE for anyone from out-of-state who can make a spur-of-the-moment decision to drive up here, and volunteer. We have actually managed to recruit a few people at the last minute, and I know we can do more if the word gets out.

(B) The hotel is in South Portland. We have a block of rooms for tonight and tomorrow night, so people can stay until Wednesday.

(C) We're down by 4 points in the last poll -- this election is coming down to the last day-and-a-half. We could very well lose, simply because we don't have enough troops on the ground. New Hamsphire and Boston folks can easily get here -- and we will put them up if need be.

(C) People who sign up at the website will get a call back within 15 minutes.

(D) Our phone number -- someone will always answer it -- is 415-935-4552.

I guarantee that anyone who wants to go up there tonight or tomorrow will be welcomed most heartily. If you are in a neighboring state and want to go but need a ride, go to the rideshare sign up at Drive For Equality. They will find a way to get another pair of boots on the ground, I promise.

Scenes from the final No On One rally in Portland

"We are that close to doing something extraordinary but we need every single one of you to step up and help us do it. So let's get this done, let's volunteer, let's vote no on one, let's bring it home tomorrow. Game on, baby, game on!"

I wish I could say I wasn't totally involved in this, but I am, up to my eyeballs. It's an insult to our Constitution to have people's civil rights up for a popularity contest. It spits on everything the 14th Amendment stands for. I'll probably phone bank tomorrow morning before I go to work, remind all those nice housewives to take 30 minutes and go to the polls. And I'll be sitting in front of my computer, watching Pam's House Blend for the election returns.

Please, you guys. If we win this, it could turn the tide for equal family rights in this country. Please. HELP US.

Hey again everyone.

I recently started testosterone, and I've been searching on google and in the tags in this community for websites and what have you that talk about the changes one goes through when taking testosterone. All I've been able to find is the short and simple sort of thing listing obvious things like voice deepening and fat redistribution. I was wondering if there was anything written that was more in-depth, like a diary sort of thing, or even something that has more than bullet points with the basics. I'm experiencing a lot of changes in the way I feel, think, and perceive things that are totally unexpected, and I'm interested in researching the general experience.

Thanks!

Introduction
 Hi all,

After not really knowing where to come to to discuss my trans issues and experiences, I stumbled across this community. I decided that it can't hurt to make an account and learn more about myself and others, right?

Hmm, some information about me. Well, I'm 17 years old and have been on female hormones for a short while now. I don't really like to use labels such as 'mtf' to describe me because I don't really identify with them. I have no issue if someone does use those for themselves though. I have the support of my family and friends and my dysphoria has lessened since being able to start hormones. However, as it's not something I intend on telling new people I meet, I don't have many opportunities to openly discuss my situation.

Therefore I hope my presence is acceptable on this website and that I can finally find a place where I'm free of paranoia, worry and concerns.

Hope anyone who reads this has a great week!

:)

Understanding
Can someone please please help me to explain to my boyfriend what it's like to be uncomfortable in your own gender.

What it's like to sit with your male friends and know fine well that you're male but have them perceive you as female, and why this is horrible. And why you can't just live your life normally "for the time being" until your transition starts.

Why I can't just ignore what's happening to me. Why I can't just see that, oh one day I'll be happy, and then suddenly that after this realisation, I can be happy and comfortable in my gender for the time being?

Please someone help me explain this because no matter what I say, I never come close to explaining it right.

Sooooo I came out to my parents.

It took putting myself in a position where it'd be nearly impossible not to to get it done, but I did it. See, I went on over to the court and changed my name, knowing damn well that the document was going to be mailed to their house. Of course, this was supposed to take a few weeks, so I figured I had a little time before I had to mail them the big long coming out letter I wrote them. Naturally, I was wrong.

A little story about that... )

How I finally lost my (technical) Rocky Horror virginity
So, last night was brews and tapas and Rocky Horror Picture Show at a friend's house. Always a good Halloween. Jeff had never seen Rocky Horror. We were in a house with people who had been in Rocky live casts. He learned quickly.

Ah, memories. I was corrupted long before my first "official" Rocky Horror Picture Show. There was foreplay, losing clothing in the backseat, so to speak. I watched it on VHS as a teenager, I hung out with cast members, and learned all the lines. I did my homework. I was prepared for The Real Thing when it finally happened in a burst of glorious depravity.

My Rocky Virginity, being as barely technical as it was, was never suspected. On Halloween night in 1997, I and a bunch of friends of varying genders and presentations put on our nun costumes, grabbed our props, and after an evening of brews, food, and trick or treaters made our way to Dream Theater in Monterey, California. We met up with the crowd, who were in faithful recreations of Rocky costumes, or simply in drag, or in goth regalia. And at the edge of the crowd, always entertaining in their khaki pants and button-down shirts and high-and-tights: the Army kids from up the hill who wore their virginity like flashing neon signs.

Poor bastards. They had no idea what they were in for.

Despite having no live cast, things went very well. Because Dream Theater was one of the last remaining actual silver screens in California, and therefore an historical landmark, we were not allowed to bring our water pistols or hot dogs into the theater. The rice, the toast, the newspapers all were fine. The movie started as it always did. The audience screamed out our lines, we did the Time Warp, and all went well until the reel broke.

Shit. So what did we do? Held an impromptu intermission with a floor show in which those of us dressed as nuns did a dance which ended in us turning around, bending over, and mooning the audience. We also made the Rocky Virgins from up the hill assemble in formation on the floor, put giant black "V" on all their foreheads, made them do a pushup competition, and then auctioned them off. I got to be emcee, and at one point was lying underneath one of the Virgins with the microphone as he was doing pushups.

Yes, I had the nun costume cleaned before I returned it to the rental place. I don't want to think about the shit that was on that floor.

The reel was repaired, the floor show ended, we went back to our seats, and finished the movie. I'd like to say that afterwards we all performed "Thriller" going down Lighthouse Avenue, but by that time it was 3 am and everything was closed, so we went back to Scott and Amy's house and passed out on couches instead.

Good times. Good times.

Coming out at work. With kids.
Hi everyone.

I'm new to a lot of these groups and I'm also crossposting this. So please accept my apologies for my sudden, spammy start.

Sam, 24 year old ftm, pre everything. I'm hoping to start taking hormones in January. I've come out to friends and family and everyone overall has been very supportive and awesome. My final big hurdle is work.

I work at an elementary school. I'm not a teacher but I work in an after school program where I have my own classes. I know there's no reason I can't be trusted with these kids but I'm not ignorant as to the stigma that still surrounds the word 'transsexual' in some people's minds. I'm really worried about coming out at work, but I'm going to have to.

Has anyone ever come out in an environment like this? Any stories or advice to share?

Network Maintenance - Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 04:00-05:00 GMT/UTC
EDIT: If you're reading this, our maintenance is OVER! The problem was not found on our equipment, which means we'll have to work with our ISP to fix this small problem -- which also means another maintenance window in the future -- but at least we have eliminated our side.

Thank you everyone, and a special shout out to [info]rekoil for giving me a great suggestion AND also the opportunity to feel like I've just called in to a local radio station.

Have a great day, night or afternoon wherever you may be.

Hi everyone, sorry for the late notice but I'm going to have to do some testing on 1 of our 4 internet circuits TONIGHT; Friday night or Saturday morning depending on which time zone you're in.

Most of us shouldn't notice any impact, though there may be some slowness or lag when I switch traffic on to our other ISP circuits and then another hit when I stop the tests. If a page won't load or times out, try hitting refresh 1 or 2 times and it should load then. If it doesn't work at all... trust me, I'll be typing really really really fast to try to undo whatever I just did. Hopefully you'll have some Halloween candy (if you're in the USA and celebrate that kind of thing) nearby to take away the bitterness of a small site outage. :(

Here's the handy-dandy Website That I Always Use to get a feel for when the maintenance will start in your area. Our site traffic historically dips on Friday afternoons until Saturday morning which is why we tend to pick this time for maintenance work.

status.livejournal.org will, of course be updated before and after the maintenance window. Or else [info]marta will get mad at me. :D
